Title: Awkward! Etiquette ‘Dos and Don’ts’ for the Management Mind
“Etiquette” has several definitions and even more synonyms, but when you cut through the gobbledygook, the unvarnished truth is – “etiquette is the expected and acceptable codes of behavior in business and social life”
Good, admirable etiquette is vital in today’s workplace. It’s a key component in acing an interview, landing, and even keeping a job. It is considerate workplace conduct which can facilitate working relationships, reduce stress, enhance business dealings, encourage productivity and create favorable impressions.
Good etiquette is about doing a proper introduction, shaking hands correctly and placement of your badge or name tag. Add proper telephone communications, e-mailing, texting, and instant messaging. And don’t overlook proper attire, socializing, company events, department meetings, working lunches, initiating contacts, net-working, thank you notes, etc., etc., etc.
Professional etiquette is necessary to make a lasting, positive impression. You should stand out in an interview or on your job because of your professionalism – not because of your crass, indifferent or uncouth behaviors.
