Some 500 Boy Scouts from across four states (Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin and Illinois) gathered at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids on April 16 for a Boy Scouts workshop on merit badges. There were 36 workshops where Scouts were tested on their knowledge of a particular merit badge to qualify to receive their badge. District 19 Director Paul Wood was asked to counsel (judge/evaluate) the Public Speaking Merit Badge.
The Boy Scouts had to complete five tasks to receive a pass:
1. A 3 to 5 minute introduction of themselves (Ice Breaker).
2. A 5 to 7 minute speech on a topic of their choosing to use body language and visual aids.
3. A 1 to 2 minute impromptu speech on a question given to them by the counsellor. (Table Topics)
4. An 8 to 10 minute speech on a project chosen by the Boy Scout.
5. A discussion on Parliamentary Procedures with questions and answers.
Paul had eight Boy Scouts to assess and all passed with some excellent speeches. The age range of the eight scouts was 13 years old to 17 years old. Paul gave feedback on their presentations and speaking styles, and also had the opportunity to give a 5 minute speech on Toastmasters to the Scouts and parents who were in attendance.
This was a great mutually beneficial opportunity for both the Boy Scouts and Toastmasters and we look forward to future partnerships!
