The time is slipping by and soon my role as the District Director for the District will end. It has been an exciting and challenging year and one that has meant so much to me. It has been a time to learn new aspects of leadership, make new friends and continue to renew friendships with seasoned Toastmasters. At the Spring Conference I was pleased to see so many first timers and Toastmasters stepping up to take District Leadership positions. Following the elections for District officers I am pleased to see a strong team in place to take the District forward to new heights of success.
In my time as the District Director I have been privileged to visit many clubs and see the passion that is growing in the clubs and among the members. Yes all is not perfect and there is work to do for member retention which has been constant issue for many Districts across the Toastmaster world. As new club officers are elected I can see the hunger for clubs to grow and to be successful. With the support of the new District officers District 19 will be a force to be reckoned with among the Districts.
Leadership is not about being out in front trying to get people to follow. Leadership is about identifying where you can enable people to succeed, to empower people to achieve their goals and to enrich a person’s personal growth. In my own way I have tried to live by that philosophy and I have also been mentored and guided by my team. To the Trio Plus of Keith Nielsen, Jeanne Heil, Amanda Martin, Brenda Martinek and Leah Cox, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your patience, tolerance, encouragement and friendship. I also wish to thank each of you as the members of District 19 for being there to listen to my ramblings, to offer new perspectives on old issues and to encourage me in my own growth.
In my upcoming role as the Immediate Past District Director I will continue to work for the benefit of the District. To offer support where requested and to ensure that the passion for Toastmasters never dies.
In closing I would like us to remember Jacque Johanson who died on May 26th. Jacque was a good friend and mentor, a wonderful Toastmaster with a passion for all that Toastmasters stands for. Her infectious laughter will be missed around the District. May we give our support to Joan as she goes through difficult days ahead.
Best wishes,
Paul Wood
